Paul and Julie are a couple that have frequented the restaurant I work at for as long as I've worked there. They enjoy good wine and are easy to talk to. They have great senses of humor and I can joke with them more casually than i can with a lot of people that come to my bar. They're also closer to my age and not in their golden years like a lot of my clientele.
We talk about sports a lot- theyre fans of all the same teams as me- and we share recommendations on tv shows and movies- but what we have really bonded over is a shared love of the Star Wars universe.
We have talked a lot about everything from the problems with the prequels to how great Rogue One is to some of the new series' and Paul even confessed one night that he has a group of guys he plays Battlefront (a star wars themed warfare game) with online. During COVID, when i was basically home for 3 straight months, i played so much Battlefront it was ridiculous, so it was good to know another guy in my age-range and maturity level also still devoted some time to video games.
Around the Christmas season, Julie asked me if I'd do a big portrait of General Grievous for their son, who loves that character. I jumped at the chance, not only because i love Star Wars and it would be fun, but i was happy to do a painting for some of my favorite bar guests.
I worked from a lot of different references and pieced together my own composition. It was really fun. The lightsabers were my favorite thing to paint. And their son, an aspiring artist himself, loved it. Hopefully, I'll commission him for some sweet Star Wars art someday.
